Maikanti Baru, group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), says the country now produces 2.2 million barrels of crude oil per day. Baru, who was represented by Saidu Mohammed, made this known while speaking at the sixth sustainability in the extractive industries conference, organised by the CSR-in-Action in Abuja. Baru said Nigeria is among the 20 top nations in terms of hydrocarbon reserves adding that the country produces eight billion standard cubic feet of gas per day. He said the NNPC hopes to sustain the current oil and gas production. The World Bank has invested a sum of $495million to boost irrigation in Nigeria through the assisted Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria (TRIMING) project of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources. This is even as the Federal Government on Wednesday, flagged-off the rehabilitation of 8,000 hectares and conversion/expansion of 5,560 hectares works of Bakolori irrigation scheme in Zamfara State. The Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, has ordered security agencies to take all necessary steps to rescue the women who were recently abducted in Borno State. The Senior Special Assistant to the Acting President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja on Wednesday. Akande said Osinbajo directed the security agencies to consider partnering with the nation’s international partners to achieve the feat. While condemning the abduction, the Acting President sympathised with the families of the abducted women, and assured them that the Federal Government will spare no efforts to ensure the safe and speedy return of all the victims. The African Nations Cup finals tournament is set to be expanded to 24 teams and moved to dates in June and July but will continue to be held every two years after recommendations on the tournament at a symposium in Morocco on Wednesday. Reuters reports that the decision must still be ratified by the Confederation of African Football’s executive committee, but that could come as early as Thursday when they meet in Rabat. The recommendations were made after a workshop on the future of the tournament, which included much of CAF’s leadership, and the decision is expected to be rubber-stamped. The timing of the Nations Cup finals has been a contentious issue as it was played in January, in the middle of the league season in Europe. The majority of Nations Cup players come from European clubs and increasingly found themselves drawn into a club versus country tug-of-war.
